What is IMDS?
Before explaining the IMDS system, let's first clarify what IMDS is not. Many people confuse IMDS with other types of material and safety documentation, which can lead to misunderstandings and errors.
Is an IMDS data sheet the same as an MSDS/SDS?
No. They are completely different documents and serve different purposes.
MSDS/SDS (Safety Data Sheet):
A Safety Data Sheet (SDS), formerly commonly referred to as a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), provides information about the hazards, safe handling, storage, transportation, and emergency measures associated with a chemical substance or product. It is primarily intended to support workplace health and safety
IMDS (International Material Data System):
IMDS stands for International Material Data System. It is a web-based material data management system used by the automotive industry and its supply chain.
Through IMDS, automotive manufacturers and suppliers can collect, exchange, and manage detailed information about the materials and substances contained in vehicle components and products.
An IMDS submission provides information about the material composition of a component, including the substances used in that material. This information helps automotive companies and their suppliers:
- Meet customer and regulatory material reporting requirements
- Identify and manage restricted or declarable substances

In simple terms:
An SDS/MSDS tells you about the safety hazards of a substance or product.

The IMDS system can be accessed through the official IMDS website at www.mdsystem.com.
Before you can use IMDS, your company must be registered in the system. Once registered, your authorized users can access IMDS using their assigned login credentials.
